Blossoms rain down as I walk down the sidewalk. They flutter down, like butterflies, showing up as specks of pink light when seen out of the corner of my eye. Life, which was scarcely there in the past few months, is now starting to appear again. Robins appear, scouring the ground for food and nesting materials. They sing to each other, filled with joy because their time of the year has finally arrived. I am happy, because spring only comes once a year, and the winter weeks of frost and snow are behind us.

The first time Trace asked about his name was when he was ten years old. His language teacher, Mrs. Briggs, had assigned a paper on the origins of names. She had handed out books to everyone titled 2001 Baby Names, and when Trace had turned to the "T" chapter, his name could not be found. When he brought up the problem to Mrs. Briggs, she told him to ask a parent, so that's what he did. "Mom," he asked later that night, "why did you name me Trace?" She wriggled her toes into the sand. The warm grains scratched against her feet, but she didn't care. She stretched up her arms and yawned. A feeling of great warmth filled her; she was so comfortable that she never wanted to leave. Ever since the first time she visited the beach, she'd been in love. When you first look into the room, you wouldn't see anything out of the ordinary.
